In Texas, the Great Plains extend southward to include the Llano Estacado, which is one of the largest plateaus in North America (37,500 square miles).

The name "Llano Estacado" is frequently mis-translated (including on a state historical marker) into English as "Staked Plains", with various folk-tales to explain the name. "Llano Estacado" actually means "Palisaded Plains", in reference to the visible escarpments along the east, west and north edges of the plateau.
