It represents everlasting life (evergreen) brought through Jesus.

There is no specific meaning of the green in the wreath. Mostly it reminds us that life renews itself and spring returns even from the deepest winter.

The wreath is made of evergreen, either real or artificial. It s circular shape represents eternity, for it has no beginning and no end. The evergreen was chosen as it symbolizes growth and everlasting life.

There are four candles, three purple and one pink, and there can be a fifth candle which represents the Christ. The three purple and one pink candle represent the four weeks of preparation. As another candle is lit each week, we are reminded of the growing light of Christ's presence.

What does the wreath symbolize at Christmas?

The wreath in the Catholic faith is the Advent Wreath. The Advent wreath is a visual aid that helps the congregation better see and understand the meaning of the Advent season. The wreath, first of all, has a circular shape. The circle, without beginning or end, reminds us of Jesus' divinity, of his sacrifice in becoming Immanuel, and of his unending love and care for us. The evergreens, a sign of life amid the starkness of winter, point to Christ's redemptive gift of life, now and forever. With the assurance of this gift, we can eagerly pray for Christ to return and to restore all of creation. The Advent candles call forth memories of the contrast between darkness and light-between the darkness of sin and separation from God and the rich messianic promise that God's people will see a "great light."
