Well most forms of piracy have been outlawed. However, there have been some recent cases in which pirates were involved. So I conclude: Modern pirates do exist and they tend to intercept small ships/cargos and raid the crew's belongings and valuables.

∙ 10y agoContemporary Pirates do not steal so much as kidnap. They much prefer to hold ships hostage until thier governments pay extortionate sums of money.

Earlier pirates usually suffered from scurvy, which is caused by a lack of fruit nutrients in the diet. They spent most of their time on the sea, so many of them were malnourished. Modern pirates still suffer from malnourishment, but better food preservation technology has limited this. Much of what modern pirates steal is illegal drugs, so many suffer from drug addiction.
