The first number is the model number - BMW has the 3 series, the 5 series and the 7 series (and the X trucks and the Z coupes) the second 2 numbers are the displacement (size) of the engine. For instance, the 330 has a 3.0 liter engine, the 540 has a 4.0 liter engineand the 318 has a 1.8 liter engine. Occasionally you'll see the M3 or the M5. The M monicker refers to cars that have been designed by BMW's performance division (Much like AMG for Mercedes or SRT for Chrysler). The M3 for instance is NOT your average 3 series but rather a 4-door sedan that eats corvettes for breakfast. Same idea with the M5 badged cars. Hope that answers your question.

AnswerSome BMW's do actually have larger engines than what are on the badge,i know for a fact that the e38 BMW 750il has a 5.4 litre engine AnswerThe letter(s) at the end of the number has meaning also. For example in 635CSi the 'CS" stands for Coupe Sport and the 'i' stands for injected engine. Which is kinda redundant today as all engines are fuel injected. Some others are...'x' for all wheel drive on cars & SUVs...'td' for turbo dieseland I think there may be a few others.
