The Irish constitution merely states the colours as green, white and orange and gives no further explanation. It has however stated, and it is widely accepted, that the colour green stands for nationalism and the traditional Irish Catholics and the orange for unionism and the Protestants under William of Orange. The white in between signifies peace between the two.
