The claddagh ring consists of a heart clasped by two hands with a crown over it. The hands are for friendship, the heart is for love and the crown is for loyalty. When worn on the right hand with the heart facing outwards, the wearer signifies that they are single. When worn on the right hand with the heart facing inwards, the wearer indicates they are "taken" or in a relationship. On the left hand with the heart facing outwards signifies engagement and on the left hand facing inwards indicates marriage.
