The Gateway Arch in St. Louis, Missouri is a monument representing expansion to the west. People can go up to the top of the Arch and view the city.
Percy got attacked by echidna, then he fell into the river, meeting the water spirit or maiden or whatever.
there are not very many you go up to then top in an elevator that is shaped like a pod

The Gateway Arch is part of the Jefferson National Expansion Memorial ( http://www.nps.gov/jeff/ ). The arch symbolizes "the spirit of the western pioneers." In the 19th century, St. Louis was a hub for westward-bound settlers; it is also where the Lewis & Clark Expedition began its voyage after Jefferson's completion of the Louisiana Purchase. Today, the site includes Gateway Arch, the Museum of Westward Expansion, and St. Louis' Old Courthouse. The arch serves no practical function except as a decorative landmark and a tribute to a unique period in world history. Visitors can ride a tram through the arch to the top.
When you go to the top (over 700 feet) you can get a great view of St. Louis.
Yes you can! I've been up and it is very cool! There is also a museum, movie place, and two stores right below it. Improvement to first answer: Yes you can, and I think that you go up in some sort of elevator thing. When I went, It was closed since it was on New Year's day, so I'm not positive. Either way if it is closed or not, It is fun to go and see!
At 630 feet high, the Gateway Arch is the nation's tallest monument ( Missouri). Designed by Eero Saarinen, it lies on the Mississippi River. Visitors can ride in cars to the top of the arch to get a view of the surrounding city.
Going up, 4 minutes. Going down, 3 minutes.
Well, there's the arch itself, which is fairly impressive. Underneath the arch (that is, underground) is a small museum, and you can ride a sort of elevator up to the top of the arch in good weather. The top of the arch has small windows that let you look out on downtown St. Louis and across the river into Illinois. I wouldn't recommend it if you are either claustrophobic or afraid of heights.
