Plants get food through photosynthesis. This is a process in green plants and certain other organisms by which carbohydrates are synthesized from carbon dioxide and water using light as an energy source. Most forms of photosynthesis release oxygen as a byproduct. So basically they convert light and water into energy.

Plants take in carbon dioxide (through pores on their leaves) and water (through their roots) and combine them with other nutrients disolved in the water to form sugars. The energy to do that comes from the light falling on their leaves. This process gives off oxygen as a waste product.

To make protein they use nitrogen, sulphur and other chemicals from the soil. This is usually fixed for them by fungi attached to their roots. However, lots of plants are carnivorous (e.g. the potato plant gets some of the chemicals to make protein by snaring tiny mites).
