When frogs first hatch from eggs, they are tadpoles which don't look like a frog at all. They are the larval form of a frog. Tadpoles are completely aquatic, they spend all their time in water, and will die if taken out from water. They have gills instead of lungs, a tail and no limbs (arms or legs). When the tadpole grows enough, it undergoes a process called metamorphosis, which is controlled by the thyroid hormone, and changes into a frog. It slowly absorbs its tail, grows limbs, develops lungs and looses gills to become amphibian. Other major changes involve changing the head, which becomes smaller and narrower, and shortening of the intestines, since frogs are insectivores while most tadpoles are herbivorous. The end process of metamorphosis is a froglet, which looks like a miniature frog and can live on land and in water.
