Big chainwheel(by the pedals) and small sprocket(at the rear wheel) = big effort. Small chainwheel and big sprocket = small effort
Same way as any gear set does. If you have a large wheel(more teeth) driving a smaller wheel(fewer teeth), then the smaller wheel will spin faster, but with less force. If you have a small wheel driving a big wheel, then the big wheel will spin slower but stronger.
yes . imagine a big gear (which is connected to a small gear) turning one round, the smaller gear turns...10 rounds perhaps? If a big gear is attached to a motor and than a small gear is connected to it as a wheel, the vehicle will move around ten times faster than when the wheel gear is big.
