Is it legal for a school to call a doctor's office and ask when and why a student was there after being given a doctor's note?
This is probably not the answer you were expecting, but I suspect that in most jurisdictions it is legal for the school to make the call - BUT -- it may not be legal for the doctor's office to reveal that information. What the school was probably doing was confirming that the student was telling the truth and that the note was legitimate. (With modern printers in many homes it would not be impossible to fake a convincing note.) However, if the reason for the visit given on the note was a communicable disease, then perhaps the school was within its rights - and doing their duty by other pupils - in confirming the contents of the note.
