Trompe-l'œil
I would not call it an optical illusion. To me it is a trick of logic, which takes a few seconds to work out: The horse and rider are partly covered by a tree (logical). They also appear covered by a void (illogical).

Put it this way: "Why did Leonardo da Vinci name this painting "La Gioconda"? Very simple. It is usually known as the Mona Lisa, which is short for Madonna Lisa (the woman's first name). She is better known as the third wife of a merchant from Florence named Francesco di Bartholommeo del Giocondo. "La Gioconda" is Italian for "the Giocondo woman" (-do is masculine, -da is feminine). So we might call the painting Mrs. Giocondo, or Mme Gioconda, or Frau Giocondo, or Signora Gioconda.

An allusion is an expression designed to call something to mind without mentioning it explicitly; an indirect or passing reference. An illusion is something that deceives by producing a false or misleading impression of reality.
A geometric painting
there is, i believe, to be only one kind of illusion, a "magician's illusion" (i have never heard of a real magician, which is why i used quotation marks, and prefer to call them illusionists.) if you are talking about the illusion as an apparition, take those seriously, and prefer not to call those illusions.
