Because diamonds surface through eruptions of volcanic pipes from deep within the earth's mantle, the mined area around the pipe begins as a circle around the pipe and expands exponentially as the mine grows downward. Diamonds are mined with heavy equipment that digs up shovel-fulls of earth and deposits them in large truck beds, which are then driven to sorting areas where the diamonds are separated from the earth that contains them.
