Pilot is the most common term. However, most airlines prefer the terms

  • Captain -- instead of pilot
  • First Officer -- instead of co-pilot
  • Additionally, the term Flight Attendant replaces the old term Stewardess(female) or Steward(male).

The correct term is Aviator (Aviation operator). In many countries it has been substituted in common usage by the word "pilot" which is used for the operator of any vehicle. The term Aircraft Commander is used widely in the military to desiginate the Pilot In Command.
