Go to the fireplace and click on the clocks.
The clocks need to strike midnight at EXACTLY the same time. To make a clock go faster, put your mouse cursor over it. To stop speeding it up, move the cursor away. By speeding up one clock or both, get the hands to arrive at 12 o'clock at the same time (not usually easy), so the skulls pop up together.
Once you have completed this task, the lantern will appear in the fireplace. Pick it up.
