From my own experience of having a bad backpain, I used a spray called Deep Heat, not sure how much it is but all you do is spray it on the person's back and they will immediately feel hot and the spray has a very strong scent to it! However if they lie on their stomach whilst the spray is being sprayed for a few minutes and after a while the pain should stop.
Massages didn't help me either for some reason.
