This can be a long process, first you need to know if the calf is sick (is its ears warm, nose warm and wet, is it breathing alright) if you are sure that everything is ok, try putting your finger in the calf's mouth if it sucks your finger it could just not like the taste of the nipple on the bottle. Try dipping the nipple into the milk and then placing it in the calf's mouth.

Sometimes the holes in the nipples are not big enough or are too big, you want to make sure that the calf can get the milk out easy but not so easy that it will choke it.

Be sure that the milk is warm enough (test it on the back of your wrist, NEVER heat the milk in the microwave, always use warm water or the stove, the microwave will remove all the nutrients in the milk).

If the calf still isn't drinking, try again in a couple of hours (if it is still with its mother, try checking the cows udder he may be drinking without you there) then try again. If it is still refusing try some warm water and electrolytes (this is like Gatorade for cows, it has a sweet taste) this will also give the calf energy and up its appetite.

I hope that this helps, if you have any further questions feel free to ask.

How long does it take for a calf to go from bottle calf to feeder calf?

This depends on when you first put the calf on the bottle. But mainly, it'll be a few months that a calf goes from being dependent on the bottle to being fed as a feeder calf.

What can you do to get first time momma cow to produce more milk She doesn't have much milk for her 8 day old calf that is just getting enough milk to keep her alive?

You will have to bottle feed the calf. This sometimes happens with first-calf heifers, probably because the heifer is too small or the calf is too big. Depending on how big the calf is, you will have to separate the calf from the heifer and try to get it to accept the bottle. Start by cornering the calf and have a bottle of milk replacer and dribble some on its tongue, or wet your fingers with the milk and moisten the calf's nose and mouth with it, eventually let the calf suckle on your hand to get it to taste. Replace your hand with the nipple of the bottle. If the calf starts suckling, good! If not, keep trying and don't give up. Keep in mind the calf is hungry, but also keep in mind the calf is used to suckling from momma by now and the bottle isn't something that means "food"...yet. There really is no way to get her to produce more milk as she is young, and probably of the breed type that doesn't produce much milk at that age anyway. You'll have to work with the calf to get it back to health, but still let the calf nurse to keep that bond alive.

Calf stopped eating from bottle?

When a calf suddenly stops eating from the bottle this is an indication that the calf may be ill. The calf should be showing other signs such as coughing or wheezing (pneumonia or cold), cloudy eyes are also an indication for pneumonia. For further diagnostic, contact your veterinarian to determine what is the problem and how to administer the necessary medicine.

Do calves drink out a baby bottle?

What is a hand fed calf called?

It would be the same term for a bottle-fed or bucket-fed calf, or a hand-raised calf. Essentially it's a calf that is raised by humans instead of from its "biological mother" being a cow.

How long does it take for a cows milk sac to dry up?

A few weeks. Often the calf will die of starvation before then, if you either don't milk the cow out and tube the calf with her milk, try to make the calf suckle as much as you can, or if you don't bottle-feed the calf. So make sure you are caring for the calf if the calf can't suckle from his momma.
