If this is the case, you should try and 'break the ice' is other ways. Utilising methods such as texting and social media (Facebook, Twitter etc) can allow you to find out more about the person without meeting and talking in person.
Not meeting face to face will give you more confidence and knowledge about the person so that when you do meet the person, it will be less hard for you to talk to them. Also, meeting the person with a few other close friends makes it less awkward.
