if my mum was sad i would simply cheer her up by helping around the house. Maybe she's just tired so calm her down and if u think she's better u can ask her wat went wrong if she doesn't want to talk about it leave her alone, she'll get over it
Buy her a nice present it will lift the spirits a bit
Make sure you're there for her. You don't state whether you live at home or not. If you don't live at home, make sure you keep in contact and if she wants to talk, let her. If you still live at home, try to get in the habit of maybe sitting down and having a cup of tea together and talking. When she wants to tell you about things, listen. Give her hugs. Make her hot drinks. If you can, take over some of the household tasks she normally does without complaining or making a fuss. Go places together; if she likes going to the theatre, buy her tickets for a good show. Also, don't let yourself get depressed as well. Make sure you still have your own life; go out with friends, keep your job if you have one, don't let your grades suffer - these would only make her feel worse. Good luck, and I hope she comes through it; mine did, luckily.
Firstly you can ask them why they are sad. Secondly you could make them a handmade present.
Another word for "sad" in Spanish is "triste."
