There are two levers, each with a red knob. The first is in the great hall (library) just to the left of the fire. When you press the lever, it opens the dumbwaiter that leads to the laboratory (which you find later). Once you have reached the laboratory, you can return to the great hall, and roll the cannonball next to the fire. When it is hot, pick up the fireplace poker and shove it left into the dumbwaiter. Go to the laboratory and press the lever there, and the dumbwaiter will toss out the hot cannonball to wilt the wolfsbane.
