What do you do when your dog is afraid of a storm?

I recommend getting the Tundershirt. Its amazing and it really works it was thundering when it happened an my dog was freaking out when we first got it we put it on her and she quieted down. If you don't want that try cuddling with them or letting them sit them in your lap as you calmly pet them.
Dogs are afraid of storms because of the loud thunder. They are not aware of what is going on around them and that the weather changes.

Tips: If the dog's anxiety level is so high that it destroys the house trying to find refuge from the storm, or it spreads anxiety to other dogs in the house, ask a veterinarian about having a sedative on hand to deal with this.[1]

If your dog is very young and is experiencing thunderstorms for the first time, you will have a much easier time to keep him from being frightened. Simply act around him like there's nothing going on. If the dog see's his/her owner acting like usual, the dog is going to assume everything is fine, and will act according to that. This also works for dogs that are afraid of fireworks.

Warnings: Do NOT let the dog chew dryer sheets as he/she can get VERY sick!

Be careful when playing rough games, especially indoors. If a loud clap of thunder booms, the dog may get scared and bump into something or try to bite.

Do not use the CDs during the firework season, only after or well before.

Sedated dogs may have a difficult time traversing stairways, so be careful! Carry your dog if at all possible, or walk lower on the stairs relative to them, to stop them if they slip and fall.

Don't scold your dog for showing fear during a storm. That only gives your dog another reason to be afraid.

At the first sound of thunder go to the dog with treats. Feed treats to the dog and be happy. be positive and when it thunders say "yeah thunder, and treat the dog. This is best done at the first thunder storm in a dogs life, as they then associate thunder with something good. There are three products you might try. Two are botanical elixers that sooth the nerves: Rescue Remedy and Angel of Mercy. The first is intended for people but can be used for pets; the second is intended for pets only. I personally have had very good results with Angel of Mercy. Both products are available online. Read the instructions on dosage very carefully.

Another possible solution is the use of a Thundershirt, available online and perhaps in larger pet stores. This is a garment that can be adjusted with velcro straps so that it fits snugly on your dog and calms him down, much like a baby swaddled in a blanket.

In addition, during a storm, keep your pet away from windows or glass doors. In a panic, he may try to hurl himself through them.
