don't wait for the last minute to tell him how YOU feel first but in a way of motivation. For example, talk to him and get to know him more and don't get too shy with him, the more you talk to him, the more comfortable you will feel around him. Then, when he is ready and you will know it cause you will have this feeling, he will tell you that he loves you.
