A 160gb hard drive for a laptop is plenty. Most laptops now are pushing 300gb and up, although it depends if you have a full size laptop or a netbook.
The correct command for converting the D drive would be: "CONVERT D: /FS:NTFS" (without the quotes)

You just need to buy a laptop dvd drive, it will work.
Usually yes. You will have to get a computer technician to remove the hard drive from the smashed laptop & recover the data from from the drive. However, if the hard drive was damaged when the laptop was smashed this may not be possible.
