The best thing to do would be to try and sell him. You could just advertise it in the local newspaper, but they usually charge quite a bit. I was able to sell several (not for eating luckily) at the local farmers market.
Craigslist is also a good, free place to advertise. If you don't want him to be eaten (I wouldn't) just say he's 'show quality' or 'rooster looking for a flock of hens', or just tell people you really don't want him to be used for food. Many people actually just give their roosters away for free, but I was able to sell several young ones for $5 each. Whichever works for you. Often, putting a price on them will discourage people from eating them and give the impression that they're 'better' roosters. Even selling for a couple dollars might give that impression. If you've been paying for feed, then you should certainly ask for an 'adoption fee', unless you're really desperate to get rid of him quick.
Good luck finding a home for your rooster!
Stand your ground. The rooster is full of bluff most time and even if he does kick at you he is still simply a bird.
