On Time Tangled Island in Poptropica, you get the phonograph from atop the Greek Treasury building (1 o'clock, 328 AD) at the far left. You take it to Thomas Edison (9 o'clock, 1887 AD). (see related question)
It sings Mary Had A Little Lamb.
The phonograph has an actual recording of Thomas Edison describing the first sound recording. The phonograph is on the roof of the Treasury at 328 BC, and goes back to Edison at 1877 AD.
Thomas Edison's PhonographThe recording played by the phonograph on Time Tangled Island says the following: "The, uh, first words I spoke in the original phonograph: a little piece of practical poetry: Mary had a little lamb. Its fleece was white as snow, and everywhere that Mary went, the lamb was sure to go."This is a recording of Thomas Edison's own voice, explaining what he first recorded on the working model of his phonograph in 1877. He recorded the first two lines of the nursery rhyme and said that he was greatly surprised when it actually played back.
