A flying elephant ! Huttlogs
A fly can fly because this word is both a noun and a verb... the object fly can have an action fly, meanwhile the word elephant is simply a noun and there is not generally accepted a verb "elephant". So saying and elephant can elephant doesn't convey a sense of meaning since the usage of elephant as a verb does not convey a known sense of action.

A bouncing elephant. or a frog with a trunk. or an elephant that croaks.
Because elephant isn't an action verb and fly is. The noun and verb "fly" are from the same source, but many other things besides flies can fly. You might cow a cow, or see a flea flee, and a bear will normally bear you no ill will.
