Sir Ronald Ross was born May 13, 1857 and died on September 16, 1932. Ross was a British Doctor Who was most famous for his discovery and developing treatment for the mosquito-borne parasite that caused malaria.
Born in India, Ronald Ross was the eldest son in the family. When he a child, his grandfather, Lieutenant Colonel Hugh Ross contracted malaria and Ross decided he would find the cause of and cure for the disease. He was sent to England at the age of eight for his education.
He began his study of medicine in London, England in 1875. After passing his final exam in 1880, he joined the Indian Medical Service in 1881. Ross studied malaria between 1882 and 1899. He worked at the Presidency General Hospital in Calcutta and built a laboratory at Mahanad village. He would stay there often, collecting mosquitos and conducting research.
Ross himself fell ill with malaria in 1897. Afterwards, he discovered the presence of the malarial parasite that comes from a specific species of mosquito and laid the foundation for finding the treatment and cure of malaria.
In 1926, The Ross Institute and Hospital for Tropical Diseases was founded and established at Bath House. It's large grounds boasted a grand house with a keeper's lodge. This hospital was opened by the Prince of Wales who would later become Edward VII. It was later moved to another facility in Keppel Street and became the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine. Bath House was demolished and mansion flats were built on the property. The block was named Ross Court in memory of its history and owner, and the original Ross Cottage remains within the grounds today.
