Whales, dolphins and porpoises are all cetaceans, and they all speak the same language in spite of making very different sounds. The reason this is possible is that the sound is not the communication, the communication is in the form of digital information imprinted on the sound waves themselves. If you have ever heard any cetacean voices, you have probably noticed a strange "Tinny" quality to their vocalizations. This is because there is a seemingly random pattern of peaked and chopped-off sound waves in every sound cetaceans make, except for intestinal noises, and it is this combination of sound waves that actually carries the message.
Anyone who has ever worked with dolphins will tell you that they have amazing telepathic abilities, and there is no reason to think they don't use this form of communication among themselves. Pods of captive dolphins will frequently jump from the water in perfect unison with no apparent vocal or visual communication whatsoever
