From pens, bottles, sunglasses, and much more there are endless amounts of uses that plastics have in today's modern lifestyle. Plastics are made out of hydro carbon molecules. These molecules are made out of hydrogen and carbon atoms. One of these molecules is called a monomer; these monomers usually have a double bond. When hydrogen atoms within the hydrocarbon molecules line up, the electrons from the bond move from the inside of the atom to the outside, breaking the double bond and forming a hydro carbon chain with single bonds. This allows the hydrocarbon molecules to create polymers. As shown below:
This process is called polymerisation. These hydrocarbon chains have strong but flexible properties. This is because these chains are held together in most cases by other elements. When creating different plastics the elements used to bond the chains creates different materials. For example PVC has polymer chains linked together by Chlorine atoms.

Plastic bags, garment bags, and netting is manufactured from low-density polyethylene.

∙ 12y agoThe term plastic refers to the plasticity of a substance and infers that the substance can be shaped fairly easily. Think of plasticene and model making. There are many types of plastics which are usually shaped by being heated. The heat increases their plasticity.
