What do you learn when Jesus calmed the storm?

This event occurs in Mark 4:35-41. On one level, Jesus was exercising His control over nature and weather. Hey, if you're God, I think you can take care of a storm. On a deeper level, Jesus is communicating a life lesson. Many of Jesus' disciples were fisherman. They had been on this sea MANY times... they knew how to take care of themselves out there. But this storm comes up out of nowhere (not uncommon on this sea) and the disciples start freaking out! They realize they're about to die and they run down below deck and find Jesus, check out the detail in this story, with His head on a pillow! They are in a "furious squall" and Jesus is sleeping with His head on a pillow. Contrast the two: 1) disciples freaking out because of the storm 2) Jesus sleeping with His head on a pillow. Notice a difference? Jesus goes up and quiets the storm & rebukes his disciples for their lack of faith saying, "Why are you so afraid?" Here's what I think Jesus is trying to get across... You can be in the storm but not allow the storm to be in you. Notice that the disciples and Jesus were in the same storm, but one of them was freaked out & the other was not. The disciples were above deck in the storm, but at some point the storm entered them. Jesus was in the same storm, but the storm was not in Him. Jesus tells us in John 16:33 that we will have troubles in the world but to take heart because He has overcome the world. Our life will be surrounded by storms, but that doesn't mean that the storms have to get in us. That's where our faith comes in & Jesus asks, "Why are you so afraid?" This was more than a meteorological lesson. Jesus is establishing where our faith & our trust lye in life. Mark 4:35-41

35 That day when evening came, he said to his disciples, "Let us go over to the other side." 36 Leaving the crowd behind, they took him along, just as he was, in the boat. There were also other boats with him. 37 A furious squall came up, and the waves broke over the boat, so that it was nearly swamped. 38 Jesus was in the stern, sleeping on a cushion. The disciples woke him and said to him, "Teacher, don't you care if we drown?" 39 He got up, rebuked the wind and said to the waves, "Quiet! Be still!" Then the wind died down and it was completely calm. 40 He said to his disciples, "Why are you so afraid? Do you still have no faith?" 41 They were terrified and asked each other, "Who is this? Even the wind and the waves obey him!"

A:Scholars now know that Mark's Gospel was the first New Testament gospel to be written, and that the Gospels of Matthew and Luke were substantially based on Mark. Not only do Matthew and Luke contain much of the material in Mark, but it is often written in exactly the same words in the Greek language, something that could not have happened if the two later authors were relying on a common oral or even written source. Matthew contains some 600 of the 666 verses in Mark. Luke differs, but in a way that conclusively proves its dependence on Mark. The traditional understanding is that Jesus was able to calm the storm because of his divine nature. A careful reading of the gospel also provides an alternative reason. The quite artificial nature of this pairing strongly suggests that the two passages were literary creations of the gospel author, and that Jesus was able to calm the storm only as part of the gospel story, not in real life.

This passage first appeared in Mark 4:35-41 and was subsequently copied into Matthew 8:18-27 and Luke 8:23-25. A storm arose on this small fresh-water lake, which was so great that the disciples, in spite of being seasoned fishermen, feared the ship would be swamped. In fear for their lives, the disciples woke Jesus.

When Jesus rebuked the wind, the wind ceased; when he told the sea to be still, it was still. A modern audience learns from this that Jesus has power over nature. To the ancient Greek audience of Mark's Gospel, Jesus had by these actions superseded Zeus.

At a deeper level, there is much more to be learnt from this passage in Mark's Gospel. The event would also have reminded its early readers that just a few verses earlier, Jesus had called James and John the 'sons of thunder', and might have reminded some readers of Castor and Polydeuces, who were sometimes known as the 'sons of the Thunderer (Zeus)'. This brings us to yet another reason for this passage in Mark. In the words used by the Gospel, Jesus "rebuked" the wind, and also rebuked James and John later in the gospel. The two rebukes form a pair (pair K) in the framework structure of Mark:

It is in a similar context that the 'sons of thunder' asked to be seated on the right hand and left hand of Jesus in heaven. This strange request could cause ancient Greeks to again associate the brothers with Castor and Polydeuces, sons of Zeus the thunderer, who were often portrayed as seated on the right hand and left hand of Zeus. And by comparing James and John with Castor and Polydeuces, the author once again compared Jesus with Zeus, the greatest of the Greek gods in mythology.

In the second passage, which occurs in a similar context to the first, the 'sons of thunder' asked to be seated on the right hand and left hand of Jesus in heaven. This strange request could cause ancient Greeks to again associate the brothers with Castor and Polydeuces, sons of Zeus the thunderer, who were often portrayed as seated on the right hand and left hand of Zeus. And by comparing James and John with Castor and Polydeuces, the author once again compared Jesus with Zeus, the greatest of the Greek gods in mythology.
