To understand consciousness we must know precisely what body and mind are.
The skeletal muscular system is the one and only system of our body that can be felt and controlled.
Skeletal muscles contract in two distinct ways.
They are,
1. Isotonic contraction:
This results in shortening of muscles and brings about movement.
2. Isometric contraction:
In this there is no change in length of the muscle and therefore it can't bring about any movement. However, it facilitates or retards movements executed by the body.
All the skeletal muscles of the body can Isometrically contract and relax as though it is a single skeletal muscle, called Unified Skeletal Muscle (USM) popularly known as mind.
Thus, the body is the isotonic component of the skeletal muscular system and mind the isometric component of it.
Flexibility of mind:
In a fight to death situation movements are executed with maximum alertness and power. Thus, the mind has to work at its upper limit. However, power consumed is very high.
However, at rest alertness can be negligible and work is needed just to overcome gravity. However, the power consumed is the least.
To make the power consumption minimum without compromising quality of movements the mind works at seven different levels.
The seven states of mind:
They are,
1. Dreamy mind
2. Illusory mind
3. Voluntary mind
4. Semi voluntary mind
5. Involuntary mind
6. Status altering mind
7. Compulsive mind.
Dreamy mind makes us the least alert and consumes the least power. The thoughts are the easiest to control. However, converting thoughts into actions is practically impossible and thus this mind is used just to hibernate.
In contrast, Compulsive mind makes us maximally alert but consumes maximum power. However, the thoughts are almost actions and thus they get converted into actions easily. For the same reason these thoughts are the most difficult to control.
The Natural mind is the default mind and also the optimum mind.
However, to be maximally efficient modern people use Compulsive mind as the default mind.
The most conscious part of our mind:
The Semi voluntary mind is the most conscious mind because we can be aware of our dreams and the real world and power consumption and control are optimum.
We become less conscious when we move away from the default Semi voluntary mind in either direction. When we use the dreaming mind we would be unconscious of the rest of our life other than our dream. When we use the compulsive mind we would be aware of just one would-be action and unconscious of rest of our life.
Super consciousness is the mechanism using which we can select the right mind manually.
Thus, consciousness is the state in which the right kind of mind is automatically selected taking into account power consumption, awareness and control.

total awareness in both sight and mind
To widen our state of consciousness, we must first understand the meaning of consciousness. We must experience moments of it, of mindfulness or mindlessness. When we stop the mind from its rattling, from its constant thinking, and experience being the witness, being the observer, this is consciousness. First consciousness may appear for a moment, or a few moments, then you can widen your consciousness by spending more and more time being conscious, observing the mind, controlling the mind from wandering from thought to thought. Therefore while the term widen your state of consciousness may be misleading, one can increase their level of consciousness slowly and steadily by the realization of the Truth. By yearning for liberation and unification, one can be a yogi who lives in union with the Divine, in a state of consciousness of the truth which is full of bliss and peace.
