Eclecticism is an approach to a philosophy or a practice that is open to a variety of methods, techniques or strategies. A therapist is eclectic if she/he can use a variety of the basic tools of psychoanalysis, behavioral techniques, Rogerian therapy, biofeedback and/or hypnotherapy, among several other possibilities. The therapist is not locked in to one approach and one only. A cook might be called eclectic if he/she is comfortable with one or two ethnic styles as well as standard 'American' home cooking, or if the cook is equally good at main courses, appetizers and desserts.
