a metal rolling mill ia a much larger unit compared to a re rolling mill in terms of variety of products(L,T,I,channel ,rail track& rods sections) & product volume.'ingots'(a large cross section steel casting about 600x600mm) are rolled into' blooms' (150x150 to 400x400).blooms are rolled to billets(40x40 to150x150).these billets are input for re rolling mills which usually produce the mild steel rods from the bilets mainly for civil construction work.the process of rolling however remains the same for rolling & re rolling.some re rolling units however use thge induction furnaces to prepare their own small ingots to be rolled into rods.here the size of the unit is very small compared to rolling mills.

What are Changes takes place in grains of steel during rolling and annealing?
Prior to the rolling of steel, the grains of the steel are oriented in long strands of caribides in the billet form. When this billet goes through the rolling process, these strands are compressed and broken up into shorter bands. This rolling process densifies the steel and thereby work hardens the steel. These work hardened grains become too hard for any further rolling to take place and they must be annealed. The annealing process entails heating the bar or billet to about 1600 degrees F and holding for a long period of time. Through annealing, the steel grains are softened so that additional rolling can be performed. A. There are approximately 2800 Re-rolling Mills in India out of which approximately 1900 Re-rolling Mills are working inclusive of scrap rerollers in India. Out of total 1900, 1167 rerolling mills are on the list of the Government whether States or Central. But the rest of the mills have not been enlisted with the State Governments or the Central Governments specially because the Governments does not provide any facilities or benefits to Industry. The capacity of the rerolling industry was assessed by the then Development Commissioner for Iron & Steel in the year 1981-82 at 20 million tones which has gone to approximately 24 million tones. As per the comprehensive survey of Steel Rerolling Industry Volume I, 1996 by Development Commissioner for Iron & Steel a total of 1213 Rerolling Mills responded to their questionnaire. The Steel Rerolling industry engaged in the supply of its finished products to the Government, Semi Government and other big Projects and Housings have installed quality control arrangements in their Mills and produce the Steel Products confirming to the relevant standards.
