If your old tv has no built in ATSC Digital Tuner , then you need a digital to analog converter box. This box receives the ATSC Digital Signal and converts it to NTSC Analog , for Tv's that only have a NTSC Analog tuner.

What does it mean for Americans now that the House officially voted to move the DTV conversion deadline from February 17 to June 12 2009?

It means that Televisions that get their reception from an antenna will not work after June 12. Now Americans with Antenna TV will have more time to get a Converter Box.

What change do you need for direct tv HDTV in 2009?

If you already have the service of satellite or cable, your fine. All that the Feb. 2009 Transition means is that A "bunny ear" style antenna ill no longer work. Hope this helps!

What is the implication of only digital broadcasting in 2009?

This means that if you have analog TV and receive TV signals via an antenna, you either need to switch to digital TV (via cable or satelite service) or get a TV converter. Otherwise, you won't be able to watch any more shows, nothing at all, after February 17, 2009.

Do handheld tv's with antenna need converters to watch them?

Unless it has a digital tuner built in, yup, after February 17, 2009.

When does HDTV become mandatory?

At this point, never. As long as you have a service provider (cable or satellite) you will still be able to watch television. The DTV transition will be on Feb 17th, 2009. All this means is that your tv with a bunny-ears antenna will not work anymore.

How do you tell if you have a vhf or uhf antenna?

You can tell by the length of the usually aluminum dipoles. The dipole length is related to the ability of the antenna to receive the incoming wavelength. Lower VHF television channels require a longer dipole to receive longer electromagnetic wave lengths. Therefore if the dipoles of the antenna are fairly long, say 3-4 ft., you have an antenna for the (lower) VHF wavelengths. If the dipoles are very short (1 ft.) then the antenna is more capable of receiving shorter UHF wavelengths (and most digital signals, too). Many modern television antennas for exterior use combine the capabilities and have different dipoles for both high and low frequency waves. Effective 2/17/2009; all TVs with an antennae will no longer work. You must have a cable box in order to see TV nowadays.

Cable went out due to storm Unscrewed cable from TV attached rabbit ears antenna but still no picture Why?

The DTV act making TV stations digital and no more analog channels. Layman's terms: Off air channels, picked up with antenna. "For full-power TV stations, the transition went into effect on Friday June 12, 2009, with stations ending regular programming on their analog signals no later than 11:59 pm local time that day."
