You need to know the proper embouchure, fingerings, and of course, how to read music. If you do not know the embouchure, then consult your band director. If you do not know fingerings, you can find fingering charts on the internet. If you cannot read music, get out of band unless you are just beginning.
As far as I know, I haven't seen a single clarinet in a jazz band (sure in a marching band, but not in jazz). My friends who play clarinet are also in the jazz band, but intead of playing their clarinets, their switch/use saxophones instead. So, no, I don't think clarinet is a jazz instrument.

To answer your question on what is a clarinet. It is a woodwind. You do not know what a woodwind is well I know. There is different woodwinds there is a clarinet, flute, saxaphone, and oboes. Nobody knows where the clarinet got it's name. I just play the clarinet.

Clarinets are used in many different ensembles, rangng from Orchestras to swing bands. There are also clarinet choirs where all different types of clarinet play in harmony. Clarinets were also used alot in the Big Band era into the 1940s. Glann Millers Big Band found what it was looking for in the 1940s when a clarinettist joined them.
