Put in your email address and password. Your Mac will take care of the rest and create and account for you. If you already have tried to create and account delete it and start over. Why can't you connect with the Earthlink outgoing mail server even though the settings are correct?
Recently, and mainly to fight SPAM, email servers have changed to require SMTP authentication for outgoing mail. Often the server address settings are correct, and everything has been working up to now, but suddenly stop. In Outlook Express, for example, go to Tools, Accounts, then the Properties of the affected account, and on the Servers page, under Outgoing Mail Server, there is a checkbox for SMTP Authentication, put a checkmark in the box. This was a monthly occurrence for me. I could never remember what their tech support told me to do last time, so I would have to call again. I'd fix it, and then the proble would recur with no changes made on my part. I came to realize there were as many different explanations and fixes as phone calls I made. I fixed it by changing ISP's.

It really depends on the Email service provider for you and for the recipient. In most cases it is instantaneous. For example, if you use gmail and if the recipient also uses gmail, then the email may just be transferring from one computer server in Sacremento, CA (one of Google's data center) to another computer server or on the same computer server in Sacremento, CA - see your email is NOT travelling from Florida to England !!! However, if you or your recipient use a company email address and IF the company mail server processes only in batches at specific times of the day then the recipient will not be able to access that particular mail until the company's email server has put it in his inbox - this is rare and depends widely on policies in that organization ! In most cases - its is instantaneous. And the email doesn't "travel" form the geographic location of the sender to the geographic location of the receiver - rather it travels between the Email servers for the service providers of the sender and receiver.
