I use a King-sized fiber-filled mattress topper. Cover that with a King-sized mattress pad and King-sized fitted sheet, and you will barely feel the gap in the middle. You don't need a very thick topper; I think mine is 2". Fiber-filled is better than memory foam, since memory foam will leave a dent if you lie on it for more than a few minutes, and then takes a few minutes to return to shape. Besides, I bought one of those once and after five days, it still hadn't "unrolled" and I had to return it.
A split queen mattress is not as common as a split king sized mattress. A box spring for a queen bed can be purchased when the area for the bed is unreachable by the queen box spring in its original size.
