Regular Cleaning

Cleaning is a must to keep your home tidy, isn’t it? The same goes for the mattress. Change the bed sheets and replace them with fresh ones. Wash the blankets and duvets at least twice a month (preferably once a week) to prevent dirt from accumulating on the bed. Make sure to dust the bed when you clean the bedroom.

However, don’t beat the mattress with a stick or heavy object to get rid of the dust. This will damage the internal layers and make them lumpy. You should also clean the gaps between the mattress and the bed frame. Remove dust accumulated in the cotton lining on the edges and sides. Flip the mattress to clean the underside, as dust has a way of sneaking into unexpected places.

Vacuuming

An easy way to dust the mattress is to vacuum it. Do this at least once a month. Before you vacuum, strip the bedsheets and covers. Remove any objects that may have fallen onto the mattress (pins, pens, buttons, etc.) that may damage the vacuum cleaner. Then run it all over the mattress to remove the dust. Don’t use the blower as it will release the dust into the surroundings, which will again settle on the mattress.

Use Mattress Cover/ Skirt

A bed skirt or a mattress cover is a must-have element in the bedding kit. The mattress cover acts as a protective barrier between the bed sheet and the mattress. It prevents dust, sweat, dirt, stains, etc., from damaging the mattress. It’s easier to remove the cover and wash it once in a while instead of trying to ‘wash’ the mattress.

Make sure to buy a mattress cover based on your climatic conditions. For example, people sweat more in humid and hot regions and need a cover that can absorb the sweat to prevent it from seeping into the mattress.

Additionally, two types of mattress covers are available. One is a fitted sheet that covers the top surface, and another is a zipper model that acts like a pouch. The zipper cover is a better option if you worry about bed bugs and dust mites.

Avoid Exposure to Excess Sunlight

We know the importance of airing a mattress to prevent smell. However, that doesn’t mean we let the mattress sit in direct sunlight for long hours. This will affect the colors and appearance of the mattress. Natural fabrics will fade and lose their shine when exposed to excess sunlight. The threads will also weaken over time.

The best way to air a mattress is by leaving it in the open under a shade. Keep it away from traffic zones, as the mattress will absorb more dust. While air fresheners and perfumes are good, using them on the mattress may not be a good idea. The smell can be hard to remove for a long time.

Follow the Manufacturer’s Flipping Instructions

Mattresses are periodically flipped to ensure they don’t wear out in one direction and become uneven. However, the flipping requirements change from one mattress to another based on the make, model, materials, brand, etc. It’s for the best to follow the manufacturer’s instructions.

Talk to a bed executive from the brand if the information is not provided or is unclear. If they say flipping is not required, ask whether the bed should not be flipped or if it’s just not mandatory. And if you do want to flip, what should be the frequency.

No Jumping on the Bed

This can be a tough rule to follow when you have kids. Children like nothing more than to jump on the bed. While brands like Snoozer design mattresses to handle such rough use to an extent, regularly jumping on the mattress will damage its layers. It can also weaken the bed frame and can lead to accidents and injuries. Moreover, it can void the warranty. A little discipline is good for the mattress!

No Eating and Drinking on the Bed

This is another hard rule to follow for people who like to have food on the bed or enjoy snacking as they snuggle on the bed covers and watch telly or read a book. However, there are good reasons to keep food and beverages away from the mattress.

The first reason is stains, which are hard to remove. The second reason is crumbs of leftovers and splashes, which attract ants, fruit flies, bugs, etc. Next, the mattress will absorb the food and release a foul smell over time. It can lead to respiratory and skin allergies.

And don’t smoke on the bed, either. Mattresses are flammable despite the safety precautions taken by the brands. Moreover, the smoke is easily absorbed by the mattress. You and your partner will have to breathe the toxic fumes, which can lead to issues like lung cancer.

Can fleas penetrate a tempur pedic mattress?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

Bed bugs can live on/in anything, but bed bugs cannot get into the mattree with outer covering of the Tempurpedic. An exterminator will need to treat the mattress because eggs and nymphs do tend to reside on the outer fabric, and it is possible that bed bugs are hiding in the seams of the zipper. Most likely the bed bugs are living in the box spring, and not the mattress itself.

Can chiggers live in your mattress?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

From what I understand they do not stay on clothes, they will stay on your body and bite you several times. Sometimes days apart. I took a shower and washed by scrubbing down my skin with a cloth. Then I washed my sheets and clothes just incase. I haven't gotten another bite since. Maybe I got the buggers.

I have two very itchy red bites on my waste line with a smaller darker red dot in the middle of each. I think they are Chigger bites.

I hope this answers your question.

How do you clean up cat pee from a mattress?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

Pour white vinegar in your washer & wash the cover as extra heavy.

For the mattress, rub a generous amount of baking soda and salt (as salt is an abrasive) roughly into the dampened area. Add a small amount of vinegar ***REMEMBER THIS WILL FOAM A LOT*** and scrub more. This will take a lot of elbow grease. Rinse. Always make sure the mattress is completely dry before you put the sheets back on.

Alternatively, use an upholstery cleaner on the mattress after the vinegar mix. To avoid this in the future, invest in a non-permeable cover for your mattress so that any future incidents will be easier to take care of. Unfortunately, animals will often repeat the act.

How to Clean a Latex Mattress?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

Cleaning a mattress may seem like an impossible task. You can’t exactly throw it in the washer like everything else. Even the most stained and dirty mattresses can be cleaned. It’s a good idea to make cleaning your bed a monthly chore whether it really needs it or not in order to keep it smelling fresh.

1. Vacuum your mattress with the upholstery cleaning attachment on your vacuum. This will help to get rid of dust and dust mites that build up on the surface of the bed over time. You may not realize they are there. However, if your allergies have been acting up, the dust mites and dust could be part of the cause.

2. Use either detergent mixed with water or upholstery shampoo on the surface of the mattress. After all areas have been covered, use a sponge dipped in warm water to get rid of the suds. If stains are very severe, you can buy an enzyme cleaner. Enzyme cleaners get down inside the stain and break up the structure of it for easier and more effective cleaning. You can find these at almost all home improvements stores.

3. Allow mattress to air dry. If you are in a hurry, you can plug a fan into the wall next to the bed to dry it faster.

4. Use vinegar to remove urine stains and hydrogen peroxide to remove blood stains. All other types of stains should come up easily with an extra dose of the upholstery cleaner or detergent mix.

5. Hydrogen peroxide will also work well to combat cigarette odor. If someone in your family smokes, you will need to wash your mattress down more frequently in order to keep the smell to a minimum.

It’s a good idea to flip your mattress over at least once every 6 months to help combat dust mite buildup. It’s also wise to invest in washable mattress covers to help prevent future stains and soiled areas.

How do you stop a wooden bed frame from squeaking?

User Avatar

Asked by Hoem

a squeaky matress has metal springs and are probably squeeking because they are rusty or some are rubbing against eachother. In order to stop it from squeeking you would have to tear it apart and oil them which isn't worth because it will make a big mess and the you have to sew the matress back together. Even if you did manage to do this the same problem would come back. If it bothers you alot then you should go out and buy a new matress (easier said than done). I wouldn't recommend ripping apart any mattresses to oil the springs, either. Just get some new box springs.

What is the value of a Thomasville Collectors Cherry Queen Sleigh Bed?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

I guess the answer would depend on the condition. I purchased the exact bed five years ago for $2250. Now similar styles sell for $2400-2600. As for used but in good condition I have priced a King for $800 and a Queen with two Nightstands for $1000, which is easily a great value.
