Frankly I would hesitate explaining death to a four-year-old. The concept is beyond their comprehension. Talk about "having gone away." More on this subject in book recommendation # 1 on my Bio Page
Explaining death to young children is difficult. There is a small, easy to read childrens book called 'Water Bugs and Dragonflies', Which uses a simple, very gentle metaphor to explain death. I would suggest looking for this book, as I have read it myself and find it very simple to read and very clever. Besides that, I would suggest not using the words like died, death, dead, gone, etc. Metaphors like, 'left for a far shore', or 'God wanted him/her to come live with Him up in the sky, it was a very great honor' etc. Good luck, and I am sorry about this death.
Usually this works, but you might get a tear or two. Say your dog dies.
"Fido is sleeping until someone wakes him up. Then he becomes a butterfly!"
