How helpful are the management theories to todays managers?

Management theories are very helpful - as more theories come out it becomes more apparent that there is no single theory - and that every approach has its time and place.

Why do projects always seem to take longer than expected?

Many people use their most optimistic estimate of time to decide how long something should take, instead of the conservative or midrange estimate. Most also don't include extra time for things like slow days, errors, late tasks, and the like.Other examples can include:A task may take more than once to get right;People under estimate issues like change management and putting corrective actions in place;People can concentrate on the critical path tasks, and then forget to look at the problem holistically, then something of the critical path then comes onto the critical path;teams forget the single point of failures - people going off ill, on holidays, moving roles, leaving the company, training days and don't have any fallback options in place; When people are doing multiple tasks/matrix roles, it can take them some time to get back in the grove to be fully productive;People forget to plan things or take things into account, which then requires more time to put it right; You can't plan for everything, and sometimes unexpecting things either within your control or outside your control do happen, and you must adjust;Taking new people onto the project is always difficult in terms of training them up and the team building that is necessary to bring them into the team;People are people, and they will always do unexpected things.

What is the difference between Product Management and Operations Management?

Product management in many cases involves a single line of products within the larger corporate framework. The product managers are tasked with making sure the procutes they are responsible for are manufactured or purchased economically, shipped, delivered, sold at a profitable price. An example would be within the old Borden corporation there were separate product management groups that dealt with Cracker Jacks and Elmers' glue products. Operations management deals with the infrastructure that enables the product managers, development managers, research managers, accounting managers and all of their staffs to do their work. Operations often will be the ones who provide the desk, the buildings, the telephones, computers, janitor services, security and on and on.. Sometimes the definitions change and operations will be the group directly responsible for the product, especially in a service business. Sometimes operations will be split into other areas, facilities, IT, food service, etc.. The definitions are flexible and unique to each company.

How do output control and behavior control differ?

When you talk about output control in a company, the managers only look at the result a single person has delivered to them. In that case it doesn't really matter how many days they've taken off or how many times they've left early, it's the result that matters. When you look at behavior control, the managers in a company look at the behavior of a person within the company. How much effort they are putting into the project, how many times they work late to finish something, how they behave around their coworkers and motivate them. This also focuses on the individual effort, if the project fails the company knows that the employees have tried their best.

What kinds of decision making situations may be analysed using PERT and CPM techniques?

CPM vs. PERTCPM or "Critical Path Method":tool to analyze project and determine duration, based on identification of "critical path" through an activity network. Knowledge of the critical path can permit management of the project to change duration. A single estimate for activity time was used that did not allow for variation in activity times Activity times are assumed to be known or predictable ("deterministic") Activities are represented as nodes or circles PERT or "Project Evaluation and Review Technique":Another derivative of the GANTT chartMultiple time estimates were used for each activity that allowed for variation in activity timesActivity times are assumed to be random, with assumed probability distribution ("probabilistic")Activities are represented by arrowed lines between the nodes or circles
