Networks allow the sharing of files, printers and other resources. Networks also allow an administrator to control the security settings on all computers which are connected to it through Active Directory.
The main benefits of using an active directory like LDAP Active Directory are many. One can use an active directory to allow for scheduling to made and updated in a timely manner.

The DS tools consist of the following commands DSQUERY - search for active directory objects matching criteria DSGET - retrieves selected attributes from active directory objects DSMOD - modify attributes for one or more active directory objects DSADD - create active directory objects DSMOVE - move active directory objects DSRM - removes/deletes active directory objects
LDP.exe is a tool to perform LDAP operations i.e It Allow Lightweight Directory Access Protocol (LDAP) operations, such as connect, bind, search, modify, add, and delete, to be per-formed against Active Directory.

NDS (Novell Directory Services) is a feature in NetWare 4.x that implements a distributed directory service similar to the X.500 specification. Novell has adapted NDS for use on Windows NT and UNIX platforms. A special e-commerce version of NDS is also available. Active Directory combines features of the Internet's DNS locator service and X.500 naming. LDAP is the core access protocol for the service. LDAP will allow Microsoft's Active Directory to work across operating system boundaries and integrate multiple name spaces, thus allowing administrators to manage other vendors' directory services. The Directory never allowed Napoleon to do so, Napoleon committed a coupe and overthrew the Directory.
