Sand and coconut shavings for the ground, artificial plants or disinfected real plants, a food dish, and two water dishes, one for salt water and one for delchorinated water, sponges to put in the dishes, hiding places for the crab, that you can buy at the pet shop, and climbing utencils, such as sticks. To build the tank itself, i guess glass for the sides, and wood for the bootom, and hot glue or super glue to glue them together.

You need a water cleanser, any kind of hermit crab food you see at stores also eat bannannas, kiwi, carrots, spinach, and celery. This is also a part of their diet.) one to two sponges for humidity, a deep dish or clam shell for them to bathe in,climbing toys, little huts and wood they can hide under, you can get a heater to keep the proper temperatures and humidity, and PLENTY of extra shells in case they need to change shells. This is just a few things you need to have a healthy hermit crab.

Hermit crabs need coconut fiber substrate and a little sand in their tank 2 hermies should go in a 10 gallon tank (i use a fish tank it's less expensive)

Hermit crabs also need places to hide in so i use a hermie coconut hut (they love it!) I also have half a log in there that they can hide in and crawl on.

Hermit crabs are climbers so have some chola wood or somthing for them to climb on. They also need a food dish (shell) and 2 water dishes, one fresh (distilled water, they can't live with the clorine in the tap water) water and one salt (SEA salt the table salt is very bad for them), they use the salt water dish for bathing to make their exoskeleton harder.

Hermit crabs need extra shells so have at least 3 extra shells per hermie (not over crowding the tank!) They might shell fight if you don't have enough shells.

Hermit crabs also need a natural sea sponge for the humidity (they have to have humidity for they die!) The temp needs to be at 70-80. and humidity 70- 80%

To add humiduty LIGHTLY spray daily.

lastly you need a humidity gauge. It tells you what the temp and humidity is.

They need about 3 inches of substrate in about a 10 gallon tank. They also need a bowl with normal water, and salt water (you can buy products to make your own salt water, don't use table salt.) Make sure you have a sponge or something in both of the bowls so that if they go in a deep area of the bowl they can get out and not drown. They also need a food bowl and lots of things to climb on and play with. They also need lots of extra shells, and a secure lid so they don't get out.

mix sand and coconut bedding to get a nice texture and retain moisture. you can put in one of the little igloos for small pets or a coconut house, some driftwood, make sure you have extra shells and a food and water dish and you can have what i think is really neat, is these little mesh bridges that they climb and hang on

A water dish with a cool sponge in it is really awesome. You can get a beach background and maybe you could paint some hermit crab shells. (Plastic) plants or flowers would make it look pretty! The mesh bridges are really cool. And you can put like a big rock in there that they could climb on. As long as its safe for your crab you can put whatever in the tank :)

The necessities are:

-Substrate(Sand or coconut fiber work best)

-Two water containers(One with fresh dechlorinated water and one with dechlorinated saltwater, do not use table salt to make the salt water. Aquarium salt works perfectly.)

-A house for each of your crabs

-Extra shells for your crabs

You want your substrate deep enough for them to dig in. Sand also works best because it won't mold since the humidity levels need to be so high for your crabs.(70-80%)

Other things you can add:

-Cholla wood

-Drift wood

-Climbing toys

Pretty much anything the crab can crawl on. Make sure there is no metal in the things you put in the tank though. To make sure the toys are cleared of germs, boil them if they can handle that. For wood toys, you can put them in the microwave for about two minutes.

Not much. A sandy floor with things they can climb on and hide under, such as a piece of coral; A shallow dish of water they can easily access, though if you wanted you could always do it island style, with the sand sticking up out of the water.

That's the bare minimum there, though you'll need hermit crab food from pet stores of course.

Hope I've been helpful!

There may be a commercial all natural cleaner available, but I personally use a mix of white vinegar (1 part) to water (10 parts) and clean micro-fiber cloths then dry with unbleached paper towels. You don't want to scrub with anything abrasive, for obvious reasons, and if the vinegar smell is strong give the tank a second swipe with water. Distilled water is best.

I made a little house out of palm bark from my backyard that they seem to like. Just remember not to use pine cuz its toxic to them.

How often does a hermit crab change shells?

When ever a hermit crab grows out of its old shell it finds a new one to call home. There is no set amount of times a hermit crab will change its shells. The hermit crab will only change shells if it has grown to big for its original one. Otherwise, the hermit crab will not change shells. It all depends on the hermit crab's growth rate and size.

How big of a tank do you neeed for a water hermit crab?

Well for the safety of your hermit crabs i would use the basic rule of 1gallon of tank space per hermit crab..... so you could get any size you want.... but lets say you had a 10gallon tank so you could have 10 hermit crabs in the same tank.

When does a hermit crab need a new shell?

You must always have a spare larger shell for a hermit crab as they have no natural shell of their own. Just place a larger shell in the tank and if the crab does not use it straight away, don't worry, it eventually will do as they need larger ones as they grow.

Small hermit crab that is cold and will not come out of his shell what do you do to warm him up?

use a hot water bottle wrapped in a towel and place the hermit crab near it. If you have a tank setup - you should be using heat lamps or UTH's to provide heat for your hermit crabs. please go to hermitcrabs-r-us.com or landhermitcrabs.com for information on how to care for hermit crabs.

What kind of tank would be best for your hermit crab and your babyturtle?

Hermit crabs and turtles NEVER should go in the same tank! hermit crabs need a ton of humidity, and turtles don't even live near hermit crabs, plus hermies can drown. Hermit crabs need their own tank. 2-3 small hermies need a ten gallon tank. I don't know about turtles, i would also get ANOTHER ten gallon tank.

Are plastic Hermit crab cages safe for hermit crabs?

yes i use to have one and we kept him in a tiny plastic cage but no netting on the edge make sure its safe though it probably depends on the crab. If it is a small crab you could put it in a plastick cage, but when it gets older and bigger you might want to change it. good luck!!
