There are a few advices that can help you to decrease a chance of getting a virus:
1. Don't visit unsafe sites. To best determine what site is dangerous, download a WOT on mywot.com or Mcafee Site Advisor on siteadvisor.com (both are free).
2. Don't download files from sites that you don't trust.
3. Get an antivirus software. I will recommend Avast!, Kaspersky, Norton or Avira because they have a good detection. Some of them have free editions, for example Avast! and Avira, but remember that free edition usually have got less better detection than professional editions.
4. Turn on a pop-up blocker in your browser.
5. Configure your browser's security options. In IE8 you also has got a Protected mode, which will block most viruses and SmartScreen Filter which will check files you're downloading and tell you about phishing sites.
6. Don't use IE6. It's not safe and you will soon get viruses, adware, spyware or Trojan horses. Download IE7, IE8 or Mozilla Firefox instead.

It usually depends on the virus, but in most cases, that will not solve your problem. The file that is causing the problem is just the front of the virus, there are most of the time files and/or registry keys that can recreate the file that you remove. Your best solution is to use spyware removal program such as Spy Bot, HiJackThis, and Ad-Aware, along with getting an antivirus program, (AVG, Avast, and Antivir are a few good free ones).

Look for suspicious activity and popups such as " Buy this product to get rid of viruses". Viruses also cause strange activity, deleted files, other strange behavior. A good anti-virus program will also alert you to any virus/malware that has been detected and then deleted. Use a good anti-virus vendor to eliminate it.
