We have three colonial regions because the Middle Colonies used to be Dutch, until the English conquered them. England had developed the New England and Southern Colonies seperated by the Dutch Colonies (Middle Colonies) in between them. They sort of stayed seperate regions once the middle part of the East Coast became English territory.
The New Netherland colony was a Dutch colony founded in in the early 1600s. The English saw it as a threat because New Netherland was situated between the New England colonies and the English colonies in the South. In 1664, the English took over this colony.
One of the main problems between the 13 American colonies with England was the lack of Parliamentary representation which allowed England to impose taxes on the colonies. This grievance led to much despair and in some quarters anger with the English - Colony relationship. The political slogan in the colonies at the the time became " No taxation without representation".
