People have a natural tendency to stay alive. short of cutting their heads of you would be surprised of how ill a person can get before they actually die sometime drifting in and out out of a consciousness just to suffer when conscious. Pain killers and other drugs are used to reduce the pain and keep symptoms under control, this is often a balancing act leaving the patient teetering on the edge of death. If a point is reached where the patient has made it known to their physician that he/she does not wish this to continue and that they wish it all to end then the physician allows the drugs being administered to lean in the direction of killing the patient.

According to the American Medical Association physician assisted suicide (PAS).
Physician-assisted suicide is a practice where a physician provides a terminally ill patient with the means to end their own life, typically through medication. This practice is controversial and subject to legal restrictions in many countries. It is important to distinguish this from euthanasia, where a medical professional administers the lethal dose.
Physician Assisted Suicide or PAS for the terminally ill is legal in Oregon under the Oregon Death with Dignity Act since 1997.

Physician assisted suicide is a very touchy subject. It has been made famously public by Dr. Jack Kevorkian. Physician assisted suicide takes place when a patient of a doctor decides they no longer would like to live. In this case, the doctor would help the patient to set up a plan to take their own life, usually with a medication. There are a large amount of arguments to whether physician assisted suicide is ethical.
