In American English, "so what?" is used in response to something that is perceived as having no consequence or importance.

For example, if a student is failing a course but they don't feel that passing the course is important, they may respond "so what?" to a teacher warning them of their failure.

Example:

"That cheeseburger has a lot of fat in it." -- "So what? I'm pretty thin anyway."

"They just passed a new law that raises the tax on cigarettes." -- "So what? I don't smoke."

"So what" is a phrase used to express indifference or lack of concern towards something. It can also imply a challenge to justify why something is important or relevant.
