1200 BCE is 1200 years before the era we are in now. it's like a negative number in math.

it's 2009 CE now so 1200 BCE would be 2009 + 1200 = 3209 years ago.

It's the same year that others refer to as "1200 AD".

The "AD" stands for the Latin "Anno Dominum", which means "Year of Our Lord",

where "Lord" is a reference to Jesus. If you happen to be one of the billions of

people on earth for whom Jesus is not your lord, then the routine of tagging your

years that way can be a bit uncomfortable, if not creepy.

So you tag your years as "CE". That stands for "Common Era", which means

something like "according to the same count that everybody else uses".

For negative years, instead of "BC" (Before Christ), you label your years "BCE" ...

"Before the Common Era".
