Paul had a great deal of trouble in Corinth, with apostles who taught a "different Christ". Obviously, Christian doctrine had become split by the time Paul wrote his epistles, and he had to defend his authority and his teachings strenuously.

In this passage, Paul says that he will not fight with weapons of war, nor try to overwhelm the Corinthians with epistles. Ignore everything imagined by others and just obey Jesus. And if another comes, claiming to be the representative of Christ, let him think again: the Lord has given me that authority.
