8x is referring to the version and speed of the AGP it was created for. There are several different flavors of AGP. AGP 8x is a 32-bit channel operating at 66 Mhz, trobing eight times per clock, delivering an effective 533 MHz resulting in a maximum data rate of 2133 MB/s (2 GB/s); 0.8 V signaling.

What is the difference between a 4x agp slot and an 8x agp slot why should cards designed and built as 8x cards not be used in 4x slots and vice versa?

All 8x AGP slots are backwards-compatible with 4x cards, so there is no reason you couldn't use a 4x card, except that it's slower. Most 8x cards should work in a 4x slot as well, but they won't be able to run at their full potential, and a few may have trouble running at a lower speed (NVIDIA cards should be fine).

Do all AGP video cards fit into the same slot on the motherboard?

No. PCI-E is typically a very light beige color and is for anything from video cards, to sound cards, NIC card, etc. An AGP slot ( Advanced Graphics Processor ) slot is no doubt specifically designed for Video cards. There are many different types of AGP ( 4x, 8x, etc ) and all were designed before the PCI-E had come out, to give the video card better speed than the standard PCI could handle.

Should a GeForce2 MX400 64MB video card work in an ASUS A7N8X-X MB 8xAGP or is there a voltage issue?

On that board there is a phyisical jumper on the motherboard that swiches between 4x and 8x agp that gforce card is a 4x natural 8x forced card meaning that it only will realy be used at a 8x speed in auto ajusting boards. you can download a bios flash for the a7n8x that will force your card to run at the 8x speed. He asked about the voltage, not the multiplier. Newer motherboards require 1.5v video cards, and an older 3.3v model might fry the motherboard. Your MX400 will work in the A7N8X-X, 1.5v. the agp setting for 2X 4X 8X is in the bios.
