There is no such thing as a 975 hallmark for gold.

It could be 975 if the metal is actually silver.

This means that the metal is 97.5% sterling silver, while the rest is is most likely copper (because silver on its own is very flimsy, like foil). Maybe the copper has reacted with the air over the years and turn the metal a browny-goldish colour, leading you to mistake it for gold? Applying a silver polish will clean it up.

If it is indeed 97.5% silver then your metal product is very rare and therefore very expensive.

It is also possible that the number "9" you are seeing is in fact the number 8. Wear and friction over the years eventually rubs the numbers down and makes them hard to read. If this is the case then the number is actually 875, which means the metal is 87.5% gold (21 carat).
